Ever since the emergence of Manchester City, Erling Haaland has racked up an impressive collection of football trophies. This season, however, the sky-blue army and the burly Norwegian striker are far from that glorious past. But hopes are not entirely dampened, as a crown is still within their grasp.

In an unusual twist, this season has been a haunting nightmare for Haaland. For the first time since joining Manchester City, the possibility of donning the English champion's robe has evaded him. At present, the title of top scorer is tantalizingly out of reach, as he would need to strike eight goals in the final two matchdays to overtake Mo Salah. Liverpool's goal-machine has been instrumental in propelling his team to the top of the Premier League. Given Salah's current form, it seems unlikely that he'd score again. Haaland bunks the third season in Manchester as "terrifying."

The torment for Cityzens started as early as late September when Rodri, the central pivot in midfield, suffered a frightening cruciate ligament injury in a high-stakes battle against Arsenal. City's dream team, cradled by Pep Guardiola, lost connection with the ruthless Liverpudlians, and two 0:2 defeats in head-to-head clashes were the result. In the Champions League, an early elimination was inevitable, as the playoffs ended in a pair of defeats against Real Madrid.

"We need to focus on improving our performance in critical games," Haaland pointed out in an interview with the BBC. "We struggled with consistency and winning matches. Yes, we did have our fair share of injuries, but at the end of the day, we didn't deliver as a team."

A Valedictory Title for Kevin de Bruyne?

In stark contrast to their glorious seasons of 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024, the current City squad finds itself in an adversarial struggle to seize a spot in the Champions League. Arsenal, nestled comfortably in second place with 68 points, is all but guaranteed a spot in Europe's elite club competition. However, behind them, the fight to secure Champions League football intensifies. Newcastle United, City, Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Nottingham Forest are all contenders, with two of these clubs destined to settle for the Europa League and Conference League.

At least there's one title left on the platter, and that is the FA Cup. Crystal Palace, a storied club with a history deeply rooted in London, finds itself in the final for the third time and is considered a clear underdog in its quest for an inaugural victory. For City, the game at Wembley Stadium represents a chance to bid a befitting farewell to the exceptional Kevin de Bruyne. The soon-to-retire Belgian powerhouse arrived from Wolfsburg in 2015, quickly establishing himself as one of the greatest footballers in the club's storied history. "It'd be wonderful if he could leave with a trophy," expresses Haaland. Even as a joyous conclusion to a season that's otherwise been uneventful, the exceptional striker calls it "boring" and "unfulfilling."

  • FA Cup Title: While the FA Cup is undoubtedly a significant opportunity for Manchester City, it does not directly impact their chances of winning the Premier League title. Winning the FA Cup would, however, add another brilliant chapter to the legacy of senior players like Kevin de Bruyne, who are due to leave the club this summer. It would also provide a fitting farewell for de Bruyne, concluding his remarkable career at the club on a high note.
  • Meanwhile: City's title aspirations remain limited, with their position in the Premier League not strong enough to secure a league title. However, they still have a chance to secure a spot in the Champions League, an essential requirement for the club's long-term standing in the world of football.
