Manchester City is on the verge of claiming the FA Cup for the eighth time, locking horns with Crystal Palace in this Saturday's final at Wembley Stadium. The Skyblues, led by Pep Guardiola, are hoping to add another trophy to their illustrious collection, as top scorer Erling Haaland seeks to shake off a "dismal" campaign.
This season hasn't been serene sailing for Manchester City, who, despite the addition of Haaland, have struggled to maintain their usual dominance. Haaland, who's won almost every trophy since joining the club, finds himself in an unfamiliar predicament, unable to secure the Premier League title or the Golden Boot. To snatch the top scorer trophy from Mo Salah, Haaland needs to score eight goals in the final two matchdays, a feat that seems ambitious given Salah's current form and the likelihood of him scoring more goals.
The misfortune started for City in late September when Rodri suffered a horrific cruciate ligament injury in a key match against Arsenal. The absence of the central pivot in midfield derailed Guardiola's team, who then found themselves struggling to keep pace with Liverpool's dominant form. City suffered consecutive 0-2 defeats in their head-to-head encounters and were eliminated from the Champions League in the playoffs after suffering consecutive losses against Real Madrid.
"We could've performed better in the highly-anticipated matches," lamented Haaland in an interview with the BBC. "Although we did encounter numerous injuries," he added, refusing to dwell on excuses. Haaland himself was in the infirmary for weeks with an ankle injury, but he conceded that each player had underperformed.
A Swansong Title for Kevin de Bruyne?
City, who grabbed the championship in 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024, currently faces a battle to secure a spot in the Champions League. Arsenal, in second place with 68 points, is almost assured of Champions League qualification. Behind them, five teams—Newcastle United (66), City (65), Chelsea (63), Aston Villa (63), and Nottingham Forest (62)—are fighting tooth and nail for the remaining Champions League spots, with two of them set to settle for the Europa League and Conference League.
However, there's still one title chance left for City, as they line up against Crystal Palace this Saturday. Nicknamed after the burned-out Hyde Park building in London, Crystal Palace is making its third FA Cup final appearance, striving to finally lift the trophy. For City, this Wembley Stadium battle offers an opportunity to bid a fitting farewell to Kevin de Bruyne, who's leaving the club after joining from Wolfsburg in 2015.
"It would be fantastic if De Bruyne departs with a trophy," offered Haaland, hoping for a positive end to a season that he otherwise deemed "tedious" and "unenjoyable."
