Hà Nội to build a $76M modern theatre by 2030 amid cultural revival
Hà Nội is planning a new 2,500-seat theatre valued at VNĐ2 trillion (US$75.9 million). The project aims to meet rising demand for cultural and artistic events, especially among younger residents. Most of the city's six existing theatres were built around 20 years ago and no longer meet modern standards. The proposed venue will occupy 9,000sq.m on Võ Thị Sáu Street in Bach Mai Ward. Construction is set to begin between 2026 and 2030. City officials intend the theatre to improve access to high-quality music and performing arts while supporting the sector's growth.
The project aligns with the city Party Committee's action plan to implement the Politburo's Resolution No. 80 on Việt Nam's cultural development. Four of Hà Nội's six municipally run theatres were built before 2000, with many now outdated in terms of technical capabilities. Beyond the new theatre, the city plans to invest in or support 1,058 cultural projects by 2030, with total funding of VNĐ36.1 trillion ($1.4 billion). Additional initiatives include expanding and restoring the historical space of the Temple of Literature. The goal is to create a distinctive, diverse and modern creative cultural ecosystem over the next decade.
The theatre project reflects Hà Nội's push to modernise its cultural infrastructure. With construction scheduled from 2026, the venue will address the need for updated performance spaces. The city's broader investment plan also targets heritage preservation and artistic development by 2030.
