The Rise of Smart Gyms: A New Era for Fitness in Germany
More and more fitness facilities operate without staff on premises. - Gyms are increasingly operating without on-site personnel.
In recent times, the German fitness landscape is seeing a seismic shift with an increasing number of gyms opting for a tech-savvy approach - enter the smart gyms. As we step into 2025, smart gyms have multiplied, with over 398 in operation, marking a 100% increase since the start of 2024. This transformation is expected to continue, with DSSV board member Ralf Capelan predicting a jump to 550 to 600 facilities by the end of the year.
While Germany houses 9,127 fitness centers in total, these high-tech powerhouses make up a notable 4.4 percent of the industry share. By 2026, Capelan anticipates this share could escalate to a sizable 10 percent. At this year's Fibo fitness trade fair in Cologne, the ever-evolving smart gym sector promises to be a hot topic.
Pros and Cons: A Mixed Bag
Smart gyms are gyms that either feature minimal staff or none at all, with digital apps and cards serving as the primary means to access these facilities. Security is ensured through cameras, and if needed, users can additionally book freelance personal trainers. With extensive opening hours, from 6 am to midnight, and some even offering 24-hour access, these studios aim to cater to every fitness enthusiest's schedule. Despite their relative compact size, around 300 square meters compared to the industry average of 1,500 square meters, smart gyms focus heavily on location, generating convenience for the neighborhood community.
For the seasoned fitness fanatics, smart gyms are an ideal fit, offering the flexibility and convenience that the traditional gyms sometimes fail to deliver. However, the hands-on assistance from a professional trainer, crucial for beginners, may be missing, potentially leading to incorrect exercise techniques if unnoticed. In Capelan's opinion, while smart gyms are a viable supplement for the fitness aficionados, traditional gyms still hold their ground, offering a more extensive range of equipment, services, and expertise.
A Trend That's Here to Stay
With a boost in digital fitness market growth and the fitness industry's impressive recovery post-pandemic, the rise of smart gyms is a testament to the power of technology integration in fitness. Smart gyms offer personalized experiences, real-time feedback, and cost-effective solutions, making them an attractive option for many. However, the road ahead is fraught with challenges, such as initial investment costs, competition, and digital literacy concerns. Close collaborations, innovative partnerships, and technological advancements, however, promise to drive the smart gym landscape forward, carving out a niche for this new era of fitness.
