Gwinn declares to EM-Off: "Quickly, everything unravels in a matter of minutes"

Giulia Gwinn, the captain of the German women's football team, has suffered a medial ligament injury (MCL) in her left knee during Germany's opening victory against Poland in the Women's European Championship 2025 in St. Gallen. This injury will keep her out for the rest of the tournament.

The German Football Association (DFB) announced that Gwinn's recovery is expected to take several weeks, as MCL injuries generally have a shorter recovery time compared to anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. However, due to the ongoing tournament, Gwinn will miss all remaining matches in the competition.

The DFB conducted an MRI in Zurich to assess the extent of the injury, and while the injury was less severe than feared (avoiding another ACL tear), the exact return date remains uncertain. Given the timing and nature of the injury, it is unlikely that Gwinn will return before the end of the European Championship.

Before her temporary departure, Gwinn visited the national team during their training session in Zurich-Buchlern. During the session, she wore sunglasses and could be seen conversing with her teammates. However, she left the pitch in tears due to her injury.

Gwinn also wrote an emotional post on Instagram about her injury and the end of her participation in the tournament. In the post, she expressed her disappointment but expressed her desire to support her team, even from the outside.

The DFB plans for Gwinn to return to support her team from the outside in the final group game on July 12 in Zurich. The exact timeline for her recovery remains uncertain, but the team will undoubtedly miss her leadership and skill on the pitch.

The German Football Association (DFB) will implement sports-analysis to monitor Giulia Gwinn's progress as she recovers from her medial ligament injury (MCL) in her left knee. Despite the setback, football fans can still anticipate a sports-analysis featuring Gwinn's insights and support during the final group game on July 12 in Zurich.
