Probe into Northvolt's Insolvency: Günther under the Microscope as Questions Swirl

Scrutiny Shifts to Günther's Role in Northvolt Promotional Activities - Günther's influence within Northvolt

In the sizzling investigation of cash-strapped battery manufacturer Northvolt, the SPD is digging deep into the role of Minister President Daniel Günther (CDU). According to SPD economist Kianusch Stender, "The Minister President too, carries the weight of responsibility and has a duty to assist in the ongoing scrutiny." The state government has two weeks to answer Stender's inquiry in writing following a transmission by the President of the State Parliament.

Stender asserted, "A thorough and sweeping examination of the Northvolt fiasco must undeniably scrutinize the Minister President's role." Ever since the problems surfaced, it's been a Ghost Town regarding Günther. Though the opposition has poured over thousands of pages during file examination, "surprisingly, almost nothing was uncovered about the Minister President's role," Stender lamented. It's a strange universe where the highest political official in Schleswig-Holstein doesn’t seem to have left his mark on the state's largest industrial deal at the most critical junctures.

The SPD is eager to glean insights into various aspects of Günther's involvement, such as the context leading to the state government's decision to forgo its own review on the deal and his standpoint concerning the assessment of a report commissioned by the federal government from auditing firm PwC.

Repercussions

Northvolt sought bankruptcy protection in Sweden on March 12. The fate of the factory being built in Heide and the ultimate financial burden for Germany from this insolvency remain shrouded in uncertainty. In 2020, the federal government guaranteed over $525 million in financing for Northvolt from commercial banks, pledging 80% to secure battery supply for the German automotive industry. On top of this, Northvolt received approximately €600 million from promotional bank KfW for construction in Schleswig-Holstein. The federal government and the state each absorbed half of the convertible bond, with an additional €20 million allocated for interest and administrative costs. Reports suggest that over half of the convertible bond has already been tapped, according to German Press Agency's data.

Additionally, the EU Commission approved direct grants from the federal government and the state totaling roughly €700 million (€137 million from the state, €564 million from the federal government) at the beginning of 2024. However, these funds have yet to be disbursed.

As the investigation comes to a boil, questions swirl about the Minister President's role in the Northvolt funding saga, but hard evidence or concrete answers remain elusive.
