Gunman's fatal shooting of off-duty NYPD officer in Manhattan tower prompts support from former President Trump
In a tragic incident that shook the heart of New York City, a shooting on Monday resulted in the death of Officer Didarul Islam, a serving member of the New York Police Department for three-and-a-half years. The incident occurred in the bustling Midtown Manhattan business district, prompting a massive police response.
Officer Islam, who was working security at the time, was one of four individuals killed in the shooting. The motive behind this tragic event appears to be linked to the suspect, Shane D. Tamura, who blamed the National Football League (NFL) for a traumatic head injury he sustained.
Tamura, a 27-year-old resident of Las Vegas, used a high-powered M4 rifle to open fire inside the office building at 345 Park Avenue. Investigators recovered a note from the gunman, in which he expressed his grievance against the NFL. It remains unclear if the shooting was directly tied to any of the companies housed in the building, which also includes Blackstone and KPMG.
Officer Didarul Islam leaves behind his pregnant wife and two children. His sacrifice was deeply felt by the community, with New York City Mayor Eric Adams announcing that flags across the city would be lowered to half-staff to honour him. Adams also described Officer Islam as a hero and protector of New York City.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer also expressed his condolences for the victims of the shooting, describing the incident as a "rupture in the soul of our city". Donald Trump voiced support for law enforcement agencies investigating the shooting.
The FDNY responded to the shooting incident in the Midtown Manhattan neighbourhood. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with further updates expected in due course.
