Gunman Opens Fire in American Store, Claims Three Lives Including a Child

In the quiet city of Austin, Texas, a shocking incident unfolded on August 11, 2025, at the Target store located at 8601 Research Boulevard in North Austin. A man named Ethan Nieneker, 32, with a history of mental health issues and a significant criminal record, opened fire in the parking lot, claiming to be Jesus, but with no clear motive.

The senseless attack left three innocent lives shattered: Rosa Martinez Machuca, a 24-year-old Target employee; Adam Chow, a 65-year-old grandfather; and his 4-year-old granddaughter, Astrid Chow. Another individual was injured but sadly passed away on the way to the hospital.

The police described the attack as "random" and "unprovoked," with Nieneker choosing his victims completely at random. After the heinous act, Nieneker fled the scene, stealing vehicles and causing accidents along the way. His rampage ended approximately 20 miles from the Target store in South Austin, where police subdued him with a Taser after he exhibited erratic behaviour, including stripping in a porta potty.

Nieneker has been charged with two counts of capital murder and first-degree felony murder, and authorities are investigating further to determine if he faces additional charges. The firearm used in the shooting was reportedly obtained through a family member, raising legal questions about firearm possession.

It is important to note that this incident is distinct from another tragedy that occurred in the city, where Patrick Joseph Wood III opened fire at the CDC, killing a police officer. The two incidents should not be confused.

Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the victims during this difficult time. Austin, a city known for its vibrant spirit, has been left reeling from this senseless act of violence.
