Gunman in Reno Tragedy Dies from Sustained Wounds, Leaving 3 Dead and 3 More Injured
In a shocking incident on July 28, 2025, the Grand Sierra Resort & Casino in Reno, Nevada, was the site of a tragic shooting. The perpetrator, Dakota Hawver, a 26-year-old with no known criminal or mental health history, legally purchased his gun several years prior.
Hawver opened fire outside the resort’s valet area, killing three people and injuring others. The victims included two men from Southern California, Justin Aguila and Andrew Canepa, who were waiting for an airport ride, and a local man, Angel Martinez, who was killed in his car and died on the spot.
Investigators have not identified a clear motive or any known connection between Hawver and the victims or the resort. However, additional insight into Hawver’s background comes from his ex-girlfriend, Zoe Williams, who described him as "incredibly aggressive," "narcissistic," and "very mean and racist."
Initially, Hawver's weapons misfired, preventing him from causing more harm. This fortunate turn of events, coupled with the quick evacuation of bystanders, allowed for a lower number of casualties than could have been expected.
The police shot and injured Hawver during the incident, and he later died in the hospital on July 31. Three other people were injured in the shooting.
The shooting incident was one of the recent mass shootings in the United States, raising concerns about potentially dangerous people securing gun ownership. The number of rounds fired during the incident was 80, all from a 9mm handgun.
In a tragic twist, just hours after Hawver's case became known, another mass shooting occurred in a Manhattan skyscraper, perpetrated by Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old Las Vegas resident.
Angel Martinez's identity was originally confused in previous reporting, adding to the confusion surrounding the tragic event. Our condolences go out to the families of the victims, and we hope for a swift resolution to this ongoing investigation.
