In the heart of Austin, Texas, on August 11, 2025, a shocking incident unfolded at the Target store located on 8601 Research Boulevard Northbound. The day, intended for back-to-school shopping, turned into a scene of chaos and sorrow.

The tragedy claimed the lives of three individuals: Rosa Machuca-Osorio, a Hispanic woman; Adam Chow, an Asian man; and a 4-year-old granddaughter of Mr. Chow. Adam Chow’s wife survived the attack, though injured.

The suspect, Ethan Nieneker, a 32-year-old White male, was identified and arrested after fleeing the scene in a stolen vehicle. The Austin Police Department is actively investigating the case, with the homicide investigation ongoing as of the latest updates.

The motive behind the shooting remains undisclosed, with authorities yet to release any definitive information.

The incident stirred a wave of sympathy from the community. Austin Mayor Kirk Watson expressed his condolences for the victims and their families, calling the shooting a "sickening, cowardly act of gun violence."

The suspect was reported to have stolen two cars during his getaway. It was also revealed that Mr. Nieneker has a history of mental health issues.

Witnesses like Paul Smith, an employee at the auto store, described the scene as people running from their cars in a panic. Neighbouring businesses, such as the Jiffy Lube store, locked their doors and hunkered down when they became aware of the shooting.

This tragedy in Austin followed a similar incident at a Walmart store in Michigan just over two weeks prior, where a man was accused of stabbing 11 people. The suspect in that case has been charged with terrorism and multiple counts of attempted murder.

This report was compiled by the Associated Press, with contributions from Jim Vertuno in Austin, Texas; Jamie Stengle in Dallas; and Heather Hollingsworth in Kansas City, Mo.
