Gunman enters 345 Park Avenue
Mass Shooting Strikes Iconic New York City Building
A tragic event unfolded on Monday evening at 345 Park Avenue, a renowned modern office building in Midtown Manhattan, as a mass shooting took place within its walls.
The building, known for its architectural significance and prominent tenants, was the site of an active shooter incident. The gunman entered the building, turned right, and shot Didarul Islam, a NYPD officer working overtime for extra security. The attacker went on to kill three other individuals, including Wesley LePatner, a senior managing editor of Blackstone, and injured several others before being stopped.
The shooting marked New York's worst gun attack in 25 years, with two men and two women, along with the shooter, losing their lives in the incident.
345 Park Avenue South, originally built in 1912 as an armory, has undergone extensive renovations to become CURE, a state-of-the-art life sciences and healthcare facility. The more prominent 345 Park Avenue (Midtown Manhattan) is a landmark of modern architectural design, housing financial firms and corporate offices. Among its notable tenants is the Blackstone Group, where LePatner worked.
The building offers approximately 300,000 square feet across 12 floors, outfitted for specialized lab work and regular office spaces. It is equipped with modern security infrastructure, including active monitoring, the presence of law enforcement officers, lobby turnstiles, and elevator access controls. However, the incident revealed challenges in maintaining the safety of high-profile business tenants in such a large office tower.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the NYPD's 911 call center started receiving alerts about the active shooter at 6:28 p.m. Sirens of emergency responders were heard approaching the building as a column of police officers hustled inside.
Flowers were tucked into a railing and a single yellow balloon was added, with a simple handwritten message: "Love one another!" The US and New York state flags were fluttered at half-staff at 345 Park, and a small memorial started to take shape. Didarul Islam, remembered as a "New York hero" by his union, was wheeled to an ambulance as his family watched, with his brothers in blue standing silently at attention, hands on their hearts.
Julia Hyman, an employee of Rudin Management, was also named as one of the victims. She was described as an "extraordinary student" by her alma mater, Cornell University. Another man, an employee of the NFL, was seriously injured in the hospital.
The shooting has sparked a call for enhanced protective measures in prominent New York office towers, underscoring the need for continued vigilance and investment in security infrastructure.
