Gunfire incidents at a Minneapolis homeless encampment and transit station leave over a dozen individuals hurt
In a troubling turn of events, Minneapolis has witnessed two shootings within a 12-hour period, leaving 13 individuals injured, four of them critically.
The first incident occurred earlier on Monday near the Lake Street transit station and Midtown Greenway, resulting in five injuries. The second, and deadlier, incident took place around 10 p.m. on Monday at a homeless encampment near Lake Street and 28th Avenue S.
At the scene of the latter incident, eight people were shot, four critically. An off-duty officer found victims in and around tents at the encampment, and investigators recovered about 30 shell casings.
The homeless encampment, set up in July by local resident Hamoudi Sabri on private land he owns, has been a subject of controversy and a legal dispute among city officials. Despite this, Mayor Jacob Frey announced that the encampment would be cleared once police completed their work, and it was dismantled by city crews under police supervision by Tuesday morning.
Chief of the Minneapolis Police Department, Brian O'Hara, has suggested that both shootings may have been targeted towards homeless individuals or locations where vulnerable people gather. City officials have expressed their concern for the safety and well-being of the homeless population in the city.
No arrests have been made in connection with the two shootings in Minneapolis. The city continues to work diligently to ensure the safety and security of its residents, and investigations into these incidents are ongoing.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing issues with violence and homelessness in Minneapolis. The city, along with its residents, continues to grapple with these challenges and seeks solutions to improve the safety and well-being of all its citizens.
