Gundam GQuuuuuuX: The Resurgence of Iconic Characters and a New Mystery Unveiled

In the latest episode of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, "Falling on the Moon," the series continues to weave its unique narrative around a new generation of spacenoids while subtly referencing the original show's major figures. The absence of Amuro Ray and the omnipresent influence of Char Aznable have played significant roles in the story thus far, but now, another key character from the original Gundam is set to take center stage.

The episode splits its focus between the final hours of the One Year War in 0079, wrapping up license footage from GQuuuuuuX - Beginning -, and the series' contemporary five-years-later era, which sets the stage for an impending conflict between the young heroines, Machu and Nyaan. These characters are pawns in a broader astropolitical game among Zeon's head honchos, which has simmered in the background of the series.

However, the conflict precipitating this crisis is about to receive a substantial psychic disturbance in the form of an old foe. The closing moments of the episode follow Tirza Lionni and the enigmatic Shirouzu, two researchers involved in two of Zeon's most secretive projects. One project concerns the development of the Solar Ray, a colossal superweapon from the original Gundam, and the other involves the successor mobile suit to the GQuuuuuuX, the GfreD.

While Shirouzu appears to be a straightforward participant in these projects, his demeanor and physical features raise suspicion among the audience. With platinum blond hair and a bright blue eye, Shirouzu bears a striking resemblance to a certain famous character missing since the war depicted earlier in the episode—Char Aznable. Furthermore, Shirouzu's voice is reminiscent of Char in both Japanese and English, sharing the same voice actor.

As if that wasn't enough evidence pointing towards Char's possible resurfacing, Shirouzu's reaction to Tirza's words further supports that theory. Tirza confides her frustration that Zeon has yet to locate the mysterious "Rose of Sharon," and this object has been associated with Lalah Sune, another central figure from the original Gundam.

Indeed, the next time trailer for episode nine, titled "The Rose of Sharon," provides a clearer indication of the object's true identity: it is a person bearing an uncanny resemblance to Lalah Sune. First introduced in the final episodes of the original 1979 anime, Lalah is one of the most critical thematic pillars of the series and a crucial element driving the primary "Universal Century" timeline's thematic thrust.

Lalah was groomed by Char as his potential weapon and emerged as one of the first and most prominent Newtypes in the Gundam universe. Her tragic exploitation became a defining aspect of the series, as she was tasked with controlling an experimental weapon of war and wreaking devastation. Despite her untimely death in a duel between Char and Amuro, Lalah's relationship with both characters continues to resonate through their subsequent appearances in Gundam continuity.

It remains to be seen whether Lalah's reintroduction into GQuuuuuuX will follow the same tragic trajectory or diverge from the original story. While her presence in the series has been hinted at through musical motifs and visual references, this will be the first time fans encounter her as a character. Whether her inclusion serves to exploit her once more or offers a chance for redemption will unfold as the series progresses, leaving audiences eager to see how this classic character's storyline unfolds in the new Gundam timeline.
