Gun Violence in Ecuador: Tragedy Occurs Outside Nightclub, Claiming Eight Lives

In the early hours of August 10, 2025, a tragic incident unfolded in the town of Santa Lucia, Guayas province, Ecuador. The Napoles nightclub was the target of a violent attack that left eight people dead and three others injured.

The attackers, heavily armed and travelling on motorcycles and in two pickup trucks, opened fire outside the nightclub before making their escape along an unknown route. Among the deceased was Jorge Urquizo, the nightclub owner and brother of Santa Lucia's mayor, Ubaldo Urquizo.

The motive for the attack remains unknown, but the incident is linked to escalating gang violence and turf wars between organized crime groups potentially connected to international drug cartels operating in the region. The province of Guayas, where Santa Lucia is located, is under a state of emergency due to rising crime.

Authorities have not yet identified or arrested any specific suspects, but they have recovered 800 shell casings at the scene. Police Colonel Javier Chango stated that they are open to all hypotheses regarding the motive.

The rise in homicides in Ecuador could potentially be linked to the increase in drug cartel activities. As of the first half of 2025, there were 4,619 homicides in Ecuador, representing a 47% increase compared to the same period last year.

This shooting is part of a series of violent attacks in Ecuador's coastal provinces, reflecting a surge in homicides linked to drug trafficking disputes. The ongoing investigations will aim to uncover the specific connection between the shooting and drug cartels, if any.
