In a shocking incident on July 29, 2025, a high-rise building in Manhattan's bustling business district became the scene of a tragic shooting. The office building, home to investment firm Blackstone, accounting firm KPMG, and the National Football League (NFL), was the target of a lone gunman identified as Shane Devon Tamura.

According to New York Police Department (NYPD) spokesperson, Jessica Tisch, Tamura, a 27-year-old man from Las Vegas, entered the 44-story building wearing body armor and carrying an assault-style rifle. He opened fire randomly, killing four people, including an off-duty NYPD officer working security, and injuring a fifth before taking his own life on the 33rd floor[1][2][3].

The motive behind the attack remains under investigation, but a note found in Tamura’s pocket mentioned that he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disease linked to repeated head injuries often found in athletes and military veterans. The note requested his brain be studied, leading police to suspect Tamura may have been focused on the NFL headquarters also located in the building[1].

Tamura drove cross-country from Nevada to New York, and his background includes being a former high school football player. His concern about CTE, a disease that has been a topic of debate in the NFL, may have influenced his targeting of the NFL headquarters[1][3].

The shooting sent hundreds of police officers storming into the building following reports of gunshots. Multiple ambulances and helicopters were on the scene as law enforcement from NYPD, New York State Police, and SWAT worked to contain the scene, evacuate the building, and close nearby streets and subway stations[2].

The deceased, apart from the off-duty NYPD officer and Tamura, include Wesley LePatner, a senior managing director at Blackstone[3][4]. The investigation is ongoing, and more details will be released as they become available.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul was informed about the shooting, and Zohran Mamdani, a left-wing rival of Mayor Adams, expressed shock over the incident and offered condolences to the victims, their families, and the police officer[5].

Eric Adam, the New York Mayor, and Jessica Tisch, the NYPD spokesperson, named the incident a 'shocking shotgun attack' in Manhattan's high-rise building situated in the business district. The attack, which left four dead and one injured by gunshot, has launched a comprehensive investigation into the 'crime-and-justice' and 'politics' of the incident, with local authorities and media outlets providing updates through general-news platforms. The suspect, Shane Devon Tamura, a former high school football player from Las Vegas, drove a BMW into New York City and targeted the building, including the NFL headquarters, due to his concern about chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).
