The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery Marks the Birthday of HM King Charles III with a Grand Salute
The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery, one of the British Army's most iconic ceremonial units, marked the birthday of HM King Charles III with a grand display in London's Green Park on Thursday.
Under the command of Major Luke Wadman, the soldiers, resplendent in full dress uniform with gold braided jackets and distinctive busby hats, accompanied First World War-era 13-pounder Field Guns. These guns are considered the Regiment's colors and afforded ceremonial respect.
The ceremony began with the thunderous sound of 71 horses hauling six 13-pounder guns across the grass, followed by the firing of blank artillery rounds at ten-second intervals. A total of forty-one shots were fired, each marked by a distinctive puff of white smoke.
The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery is world-renowned for their ceremonial excellence, and their performance in Green Park was no exception. Though they are best known for their ceremonial duties, it's important to note that these soldiers are also fully trained members of the Royal Artillery.
The Band of the Scots Guards provided musical accompaniment during the ceremony, adding a touch of melody to the grand occasion.
Across the country, 21 Gun Salutes were fired to mark the 74th birthday of HM King Charles III. This tradition dates back centuries, with gun salutes and music marking the first formal birthday salute for Her Majesty The Queen on July 17, 2023.
The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery, which fires the 41-gun salute in The Green Park for His Majesty's birthday, is under the command of the Captain General of the Royal Regiment of Artillery, a position held by King Charles III. The day-to-day head of the regiment is the Master Gunner, St. James's Park.
The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery remains permanently based in Woolwich, ready to serve operationally in support of UK military operations when duty calls. This versatility, combining ceremonial excellence with operational readiness, is a testament to the enduring legacy of this esteemed unit.
