Gulliksen's doubling up: Rapid's push for advancement in the ÖFB Cup competition
Rapid Suffers Error-Prone Performance in Cup Match Against Oberwart
In a thrilling Cup match, Rapid faced off against Oberwart, with the former aiming to secure a spot in the Round of 16. The game kicked off with a firework display in the Rapid sector, but the team was unable to capitalize on the opening spaces.
Gernot Plassnegger's team defended bravely for 20 minutes, keeping the favorites at bay. However, a cross from Wurmbrand found Tobias Gulliksen, who scored his first goal, giving Rapid a 0:1 lead. Gulliksen was in the starting lineup for the first time against Oberwart.
Oberwart responded through Lukas Ried, who scored a penalty goal, making it 1:2. But the Rapid team had opportunities to level the score in the last quarter of the game, only to be too error-prone to capitalize.
The video analysts of the Rapid team had analyzed all of Oberwart's games, but it seemed their insights could not help the team avoid the offside call that disallowed Martin Ndzie's goal.
Oberwart, who have invested in infrastructure and a rejuvenated team in recent years, reported selling around 15,000 tickets, but only 6,000 fans could attend due to restrictions. The attendance of 6,000 fans was a record for Oberwart.
Peter Stoeger, the head coach of Rapid, made three substitutions at once after 69 minutes. Gulliksen capitalized on this change, scoring his second goal of the match, assisted by Wurmbrand, securing a 2:1 win for Rapid.
With this victory, Rapid will be part of the Cup Round of 16. The draw for the next round will take place on Saturday. Notably, the Cup match in Oberwart was an emotional reunion for Rapid co-trainer Daniel Seper, who lives almost next to the Informstadion and ended his active playing career at his hometown club SV Oberwart.
Jonas Auer did not make it into the matchday squad against Oberwart. Despite the error-prone performance, Rapid's festival atmosphere was somewhat dampened by the pitch conditions in Oberwart, which didn't quite match the excitement of the game.
