Breaking the Stereotypes: The Songwriting Genius of Iron Maiden's Bassist, Steve Harris

"Guitarists might find it unusual, but it challenges them as musicians": Dave Murray attributes Iron Maiden's uniqueness to their bassist serving as the primary songwriter.

Ever heard the ancient band saying that the guitarist writes the songs? Well, not for Iron Maiden! Contrary to the cliché, bassist Steve Harris has ruled the roost when it comes to songwriting in this legendary heavy metal band.

Since their formation in 1975, what first began as a fusion of punk and metal, Iron Maiden has crafted iconic tracks like the war-mongering gallop of The Trooper and the proto-prog epic Hallowed Be Thy Name. All of these masterpieces pop out from Harris' imaginative mind and his persistently twitching fingers. Lead guitarist Dave Murray believes that Harris' unique songwriting style has contributed significantly to their success.

"I think when Steve writes a song, there's an identity to it," Murray confesses to MusicRadar. "And it's probably something a guitar player wouldn't write, some of the melodies and the time changes. That's great because it pushes you, and stretches you as a player."

The Solo Mastermind

Harris takes the lead when it comes to songwriting, a role more commonly assigned to the guitarist in most bands. Though Murray does have several co-writing credits across Iron Maiden's back catalog, he's content to take a back seat. The major decisions are usually discussed by Harris, vocalist Bruce Dickinson, and manager Ron Smallwood.

"You do need someone upfront, and Steve's had that from the very beginning," Murray explains. "Personally, I prefer to just be part of the team. I'm fine being laid back. It takes a lot to annoy me, because to me it's a waste of time. I don't need to have that anger."

Keeping the Fingers Busy

As the primary songwriter driving Iron Maiden's distinctive sound, Harris' compositions keep Murray on his toes. "We're not just a twelve-bar blues band playing four chords," Murray laughs.

The other members of Iron Maiden are just as committed to the band's success. Drummer Nicko McBrain provides the rhythmic foundation, complementing Harris' bass lines and adding to the band's energy. On vocals, Bruce Dickinson brings a powerful presence, often co-writing songs with Harris and other members. The guitarists, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, and Janick Gers, play vital roles in shaping the band's sound.

Harris' Influences and Legacy

Harris' songwriting is deeply rooted in diverse musical influences, including bands like Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and Genesis. His songs weave together heavy riffs, progressive elements, and galloping bass lines, resulting in a distinctive sound that has stood the test of time. Some of his notable tracks include "The Trooper," "Run to the Hills," "Blood Brothers," and "Alexander the Great."

Harris' contribution to heavy metal music is undeniable. His ability to craft both epic narratives and introspective tracks showcases his versatility and musical genius. Despite being known primarily as a bassist, it's undeniable that Harris is the driving force behind Iron Maiden's sound and success.
