In a split-second, everything changed for the star cricketer, who was left with serious facial injuries, broken ribs, and the haunting memories of the crash that nearly took him out for good.
Snatching a golden ticket to life, Freddie spent months navigating his physical and emotional journey, confronting his fears, and finding a new way forward.
Inside the horrors of the crash
On that fateful day in December 2022, the three-wheel Morgan Super 3, an open-top vehicle that Flintoff was driving, flipped and skidded along the track during filming at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey[1].
Without a helmet, the media darling's life hung in the balance as he was dragged 50 metres face-down across the runway, hidden beneath the overturned car.
As he recounts in the documentary, the open-top car turned over as he was learning to 'get the car going sideways', but then, 'the wheel came off at the front'.
"It’s a strange thing rolling a car," he admits. "There’s a point of no return. And everything slows down. It's so weird."[2]
The powerful moments of impact, escape, and survival dash across the screen, painting a vivid picture of Flintoff's harrowing ordeal.
Coming back from the abyss
With personal insights, interviews with family and friends, and footage from the crash, the documentary takes viewers on an intimate trip through Freddie Flintoff’s physical and emotional rebirth.
"I've lived under the radar for seven months, one of the real frustrations was the speculation, that's why I'm doing this now," he says in the trailer, explaining his decision to share his story[2].
The clip showcases Freddie's rise to fame as a trailblazing sportsman and beloved TV personality, as well as his emotional and physical scars from the crash: "This is what I'm left with."
In the aftermath, Flintoff faced struggles with 'phantom pain', PTSD, and exhaustion[3]. "My biggest fear was, I didn't think I had a face. I thought my face had come off," he confesses, revealing his deepest fears[3].
"I've always seemed to be able to flick a switch," declares Flintoff. "I've got to find that switch again."
