How to Spare Undyne in Undertale (Pacifist or Neutral)

In the third boss encounter of Undertale's Neutral and True Pacifist routes, players face Undyne. However, it's possible to spare this formidable adversary by following some strategic moves. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to achieve this.

General Approach

  1. Enter Undyne's Cave: To initiate the battle, simply advance towards Undyne's entrance atop Waterfall's crag.
  2. Deflect Attacks with Green Soul Mode: During the battle, Undyne will switch between two Soul Modes—Red Soul (standard mode) and Green Soul (shield mode). During Green Soul mode, you must block her attacks using the shield provided.
  3. Run Away in Red Soul Mode: When Undyne recaptures your soul, select the "Flee" option and navigate further into the cave. Undyne will eventually catch up, but that's part of the process.
  4. Repeat until Success: Keep repeating steps 2 and 3 until you've fled from Undyne several times, ultimately reaching Hotland.
  5. Offer Her Water: Upon reaching Hotland and crossing the bridge, Undyne will be visibly drained; give her water from a nearby dispenser to befriend her.

Undyne's Attacks and Soul Modes

Green Soul Mode

In this mode, you become immobile, and a shield is provided to block Undyne's attacks. Regardless of your physical movement, you must strategically position your shield to block incoming arrows.

Red Soul Mode

This mode allows normal movement and attacks. While in this mode, Undyne will launch a series of spear volleys that deal 5 damage per hit, as well as one spear with 4 damage upon entering Red Soul mode.

On the Genocide route, Undyne the Undying interferes with different attacks, each dealing more damage. To face Undyne the Undying, players must adopt a new strategy, as detailed on her dedicated page.

Alternative: Fighting Undyne

If you decide to defeat Undyne instead of sparing her, simply choose to "Fight" during Red Soul mode. Once her health bar is depleted, Undyne will acknowledge your strength and proceed with her Determination attack. Although she becomes slower, she continues attacking until she dissipates into dust. While this option is available for the Neutral route, it is not feasible during the True Pacifist route.

Tips for a Smooth Battle

  • Keep plenty of food such as Temmie Flakes or Crab Apples in your Inventory.
  • Undyne's attacks can be memorized with careful observation of attack patterns.
  • Using the "Plead" act modifies Undyne's attacks, making them slightly easier to dodge.
  • Get as many healing items as possible, and make sure to have some for the battle ahead.

How to ensure Undyne's health during the fight at home involves offering her water in Hotland after repeatedly fleeing from her in Red Soul Mode. In case a player chooses to fight Undyne instead, entertainment can be found by watching Undyne's aggressive battle style, but it's not an option in the True Pacifist route.
