Gubernatorial debates in New Jersey are officially set at three, here's the reason behind it.

In the lead-up to the 2025 gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and New York, several key players are preparing for the much-anticipated debates.

The New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission (ELEC) plays a pivotal role in overseeing all aspects of campaign financing for every election and administers public financing for gubernatorial campaigns. ELEC is also responsible for selecting debate sponsors through an application process.

Applications to sponsor a New Jersey Governor's race debate can typically be submitted by media organizations, civic groups, or political organizations involved in the election process. Potential sponsors must also include information about the size of their New Jersey audience and their geographical reach.

The four-member, bipartisan commission selects debate sponsors, and while they may choose different sponsors for each debate, they are not required to do so. For instance, Rider University is a sponsor for the first gubernatorial debate in 2025, while 6abc in Philadelphia and WABC-TV in New York City are sponsors of the second debate at the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center. The Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University is another co-sponsor for the second debate.

In New York, Univision 41 in New York is providing a livestream with Spanish captioning for the second gubernatorial debate. Meanwhile, PHL17 in Philadelphia and PIX11 in New York City, both owned by Nexstar Media Group, are sponsoring the debate with the gubernatorial running mates at Kean University.

Candidates who receive public financing for their campaigns are required to participate in debates. Broadcasters must also share information on how they plan to promote the event and inform the public.

During the primary season in 2025, debates were also hosted by Rider University, New Jersey Globe, and On New Jersey. The locations for these debates varied, with the first gubernatorial debate being held in Central Jersey.

The second gubernatorial debate in 2025 will take place at the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center, while the location for the first debate has yet to be announced. Micah Rasmussen, director of the Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics at Rider University, has been focusing on building a streaming audience for the debates.

Applications to be a debate sponsor are due on July 1 during a gubernatorial election year. The commission may select different sponsors for each debate, but is not required to do so. This diverse range of sponsors ensures that a broad audience can access the debates, fostering informed decision-making among voters.
