Guatemalan Officials Set to Tour Alcatraz
In July 2025, Guatemalan representatives paid a visit to the Everglades Detention Facility, or the Dade-Collier migrant detention facility in Ochopee, Florida, popularly known as "Alligator Alcatraz." This facility, notorious for its harsh conditions and remote location, has been a subject of intense scrutiny and criticism.
The detainees at this facility reportedly endure challenging living conditions, including exposure to extreme temperatures, swarms of mosquitoes, and inadequate sanitation facilities. Toilets sometimes malfunction, leading to unsanitary environments, and detainees have limited access to natural light or clocks.
Human rights organizations have strongly condemned the facility for its lack of transparency, oversight, and conditions that may violate basic standards of humane treatment and legal rights. The camp operates with military-style tents on a remote airstrip, where constant artificial lighting disrupts natural sleep cycles, further adding to the detainees' distress. Legal support is reportedly hard to secure despite detainees attempting to hire attorneys.
The isolation and poor conditions have drawn comparisons to a "gulag," reflecting harsh and punitive imprisonment rather than standard refugee or immigration detention. This visit by Guatemalan representatives likely aims to assess the wellbeing and legal situation of Guatemalan detainees amid growing international criticism of the facility and concerns over violations of international law regarding asylum seekers.
It is important to note that the conditions in "Alligator Alcatraz" have been sharply criticized by human rights groups, and President Donald Trump, during his campaign, promised "the largest deportation program in the history of the United States." However, it's worth mentioning that Trump's comments about reopening Alcatraz, another infamous prison, for housing migrants were made during his campaign but are considered unrealistic due to the enormous costs involved.
The nickname "Alligator Alcatraz" was coined by Florida's Justice Minister James Uthmeier, referring to the infamous Alcatraz prison on an island off San Francisco. The facility currently houses a thousand adult men in metal cage beds.
The visit by Guatemalan representatives is scheduled for next Thursday, while President Trump visited "Alligator Alcatraz" last month. During his visit, Trump praised the harsh conditions at the facility, which critics consider inhumane. The visit by the Guatemalan representatives comes as a significant step towards addressing the concerns raised by human rights groups and ensuring the protection of the rights of asylum seekers.

Despite the numerous reports from Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and The New York Times highlighting the dire conditions at the Everglades Detention Facility, also known as "Alligator Alcatraz", the Commission has not yet received any reply from the US government regarding these concerns. The ongoing political tensions surrounding immigration and refugee policies have obstructed any substantial improvements at the facility, with President Trump praising its harsh conditions, which have been compared to a "gulag."
