Guarantee of Life Insurance for Retired Ministers Secured through Majority Vote in STF
Brasília Shakes Up Court Security
Taking a drastic leap, the Supreme Federal Court (STF) in Brazil's capital has decided to safeguard the security of its former ministers for a lifetime. Previously, the security escort provided proved to be a temporary measure, guaranteed for a maximum of six years post-retirement.
This dramatic alteration in the security protocol comes as a response to potential dangers that may still linger for former judges, given the weighty and often controversial nature of their roles. With this decision, the STF aims to uphold the protection and dignity of its retired members indefinitely.
As of now, the Supreme Court's virtual plenary session has already made the call, offering this lifelong institutional protection. Although the specifics of the vote, such as the count or dissenting opinions, remain undisclosed, the decision seems to have been cemented in favor of granting this extraordinary right to the court's former members.
Minister Carmen Lúcia, who was yet to cast her vote, had not weighed in until the report was published. Marco Aurélio Mello, the retiree who initially requested the change in security policy, had earlier asked for a six-year extension to his security detail. However, his recent plea sought an unlimited protection period.
Judge Luís Roberto Barroso, the rapporteur, cast his vote in favor of the proposal. Reflecting on the current security climate, Barroso stated that the situation hasn't improved since the decision to expand the time for the provision of security services was first made. On the contrary, he argued, the situation has grown increasingly perilous. He detailed the 2024 bombing of the STF's headquarters and persistent threats against sitting judges that necessitate this extended protection.
Whether this lifelong security measure comes as a needed safeguard or an unnecessary extravagance remains subjective. Yet, regardless of opinion, one thing remains clear – the STF intends to ensure the safety and wellbeing of its esteemed members, even beyond their tenure.
