GTA 6 trailer commences with a humorous reference to past hacking incidents, echoing the chaos of the 2022 digital break-in.
Laughin' at Leaks: GTA 6 Trailer's Joke About Repairs and the BIGGEST Gaming Leak in History
Jump into the Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer with a chuckle—that stirring line about fixing leaks has a tinge of irony. Dig a bit deeper, and you'll find that it serves as a nod to the numerous leaks hounding the game's development, especially theinfamous 2022 hack.
As you scrub past the start of the scene, listen to Jason's casual comment: "Oh, just fixin' some leaks." Rockstar, a studio renowned for its attention to detail, sure as hell doesn't miss a trick. This seemingly throwaway line likely refers to the countless GTA 6 leaks spotted during its lengthy development process.
The juiciest one came in 2022, when 90 dev build videos went public, joining the ranks of the largest leaks in gaming history. It's alongside the Half-Life 2 source code theft and felt like a sign of the times. You guessed it; the pandemic's surge led to a shift to remote working, which increased information transmission outside traditional office networks and expanded the scope for hacking and phishing attempts.
The hack wasn't the first time GTA 6 leaked, nor was it the last. In 2023, a sneak peek of the first GTA 6 trailer surfaced before Rockstar themselves released it, causing the developers to rush things up. But the 2022 breach was the most discussed incident—and it was performed by a 17-year-old hacker, fresh out on bail after being under police protection, thanks to getting doxxed by rival hackers.
That's right, Arion Kurtaj allegedly bypassed Rockstar's security from a Travelodge hotel and utilized all sorts of clever tricks to find his way onto the studio's protected servers, despite being under house arrest and an internet ban. The court sentenced Kurtaj to an unspecified duration in a secure hospital, believing that he would continue his criminal activities in the cyber realm as soon as he got out.
Another 17-year-old hacker was also tried, found guilty and sentenced to an 18-month Youth Rehabilitation Order, which included expensive supervision and a strict ban on using VPNs online—good luck with that!
So, it seems fitting that a game series centered around frivolous criminality would fall prey to actual crime. But Rockstar Games didn't seem to find much humor in the situation, claiming they spent a hefty $5 million to regain control of their data.
The recent trailer's humoristic opening would've packed a bigger punch had it also leaked early, but this one dropped at the time Rockstar intended it to. It wasn't much of a surprise, as we were expecting a new trailer closer to the start of the year, but when that didn't happen, we started to predict a delay announcement. Guess what? We got it last week—GTA 6 has been pushed back to May 2026.
Stock prices might not have been hugely affected, but trust us, it'll take one amazing new trailer to get them revved up again, and hey, we're eagerly waiting for it!
