Carmen Kaps, the managing director of the region's Fruit Growers' Association, explained that some early cherries were affected but there's no need for panic about total crop losses.

This scenario pales in comparison to last year, when a vicious April freeze took down about 80% of the crop. As of now, apple trees haven't progressed to a stage that's vulnerable to frost damage, according to Kaps.
Blossom freeze resistance
Closed buds can typically ward off freezing temperatures, however once the flower buds open or have fully bloomed, they struggle to withstand frost. Late frosts in particular are a headache for fruit growers.
A smattering of frost-affected apricot, peach, and nectarine trees can be found near the Sweet See between Eisleben and Halle. Rest assured, it's not a cause for alarm yet. "People are still pretty laid-back about it," said Kaps.
To safeguard the delicate blossoms in the Sweet See growing area, an irrigation system was employed to create a protective layer of ice via frost protection irrigation. This process helps shield the blossoms and young shoots under a frozen shell from further frost damage.
Mixed forecast ahead
Fruit growers are now keeping their fingers crossed for frost-free nights. "That's our biggest worry: if there's a run of warm days followed by another frost, that would be a real pain," Kaps explained.
The German Weather Service forecasts a flow of relatively dry cold air heading towards Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt from the north. Overnight frosts are expected in some areas from Tuesday to Wednesday, but things are forecasted to warm up gradually as the week progresses.
