Criticizing Israel: CSU Parliamentary Leader Stands by Israel, Rejects Sanctions
Critique of Israel acceptable among CSU faction leaders, but imposition of sanctions is a no-go. - Group leader at Colorado State University: Support for Israel critique, but opposition to sanctions
In the ongoing discussion about Israel, CSU parliamentary group leader Alexander Hoffmann contradicts the statements made by Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU), who suggests reviewing weapons deliveries to the country. "Criticizing allies is acceptable, but imposing sanctions isn't. That would be the end of diplomatic reason towards Israel, and that's not something the CSU can stomach," Hoffmann told "Der Spiegel." According to Hoffmann, the recent Gaza war, initiated by a terrorist attack and hostage-taking by the terrorist group Hamas, shouldn't lead Germany to abandon its solidarity with Israel.
Previously, Wadephul announced in the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" that German arms exports to Israel would be scrutinized. "We will examine whether what's happening in Gaza can be reconciled with international humanitarian law," he said. "Based on this review, we will authorize further weapons deliveries if needed." When asked if this could also result in weapons deliveries not being approved, Wadephul affirmed: "That's what the formulation implies."
