In a recent legal development, Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant has secured a significant victory in a breach of contract lawsuit against local restaurant The Wing Guru. The eatery has been ordered by the Shelby County Chancery Court to pay Morant over $300,000 in damages and interest, with an additional injunction preventing them from using Morant’s name, image, and likeness for promotional purposes [1][2][3][4][5].

The dispute began when Morant, who had agreed to promote The Wing Guru, claimed that the restaurant stopped paying him while continuing to use his name, image, and likeness. The contract was signed in January 2022, and payments were withheld four months later [6]. Despite several attempts to resolve the issue, Morant's attorneys sent a letter to The Wing Guru in November 2022, asking for the owed money to be paid. However, the restaurant did not respond [1].

The Wing Guru made a promise to pay Morant the full $75,000 on Instagram, but they did not follow through on that promise [7]. The restaurant's failure to respond to the lawsuit and attempts to serve summons resulted in a default judgment in Morant’s favour, leading to the current ruling.

Meanwhile, the owner of The Wing Guru, Billy Richmond, is facing separate charges of tax fraud and theft. Richmond was indicted in Shelby County for these allegations, with the theft charges alleged to have taken place between Jan. 1, 2018, and Jan. 1, 2022 [8]. Richmond will next appear in court on Sept. 15 for a report date before Criminal Court Judge Jennifer Mitchell [9]. However, updates on the current legal status or developments related to these charges against Richmond remain unreported or undisclosed at this time.

The Wing Guru, which opened in 2016 [10], has yet to publicly comment on these legal matters. The restaurant's current status following the breach of contract lawsuit remains to be seen.
