Saxony-Anhalt's Skilled Workforce Recruitment Boost

Health Minister Petra Grimm-Benne (SPD) of Saxony-Anhalt is advocating for a central portal to streamline the process of hiring international talent. Employers in need of skilled workers from countries like Brazil or India should not face unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles, she argued, with the aim to make the recruitment process more business-friendly.

The proposed portal will be digital and multilingual, offering guidance and support to both companies and skilled workers. This includes clarifying residence law questions and relieving the burden on immigration authorities by pre-sorting documents and offering support services. In addressing the high workload of local immigration authorities due to increased refugee numbers, Grimm-Benne emphasized the importance of having immigration on the labor market. Transparency is crucial for understanding the access routes, responsibilities, and application processing times as the region competes with other federal states for top talent.

While there has been skepticism over centralizing immigration authorities by district councillors, support from fellow SPD politician Federal Labour Minister Hubertus Heil points to the benefits. Currently, 8 out of 16 federal states have centralized their immigration tasks, emphasizing the need to accelerate procedures and improve the process for international skilled workers.
