Eyewitnesses confirmed the incident, and numerous rescue workers, stewards, and law enforcement officers responded promptly. Distraught onlookers asked for more first responders as the scene was draped in a tarp for privacy while medical professionals attempted to save the fan.

The star-studded Portuguese team, including Ronaldo, appeared not to be aware of the emergency during the game itself or the trophy ceremony. Portugal clinched victory in extra time, winning 5:3 (2:2, 2:2, 1:2) in a nail-biting penalty shootout.
