In a surprising turn of events, long-time chairman Thomas Grethlein (65) has bid farewell to his role in 1. FC Nürnberg's supervisory board. With merely 746 votes under his belt, Grethlein fell short in the election for the supervisory body and found himself leaving the Club after nine years, following the general meeting held on Thursday evening.

Once a controversial figure amongst the fans, Grethlein joined the supervisory board in 2014 and held the coveted position as chairman of the second-division club ever since. The new members appointed as a result of the election include Chhunly Pagenburg, Raphael Schäfer, and Matthias Fifka, all of whom garnered more votes than Grethlein.

Chhunly Pagenburg and Matthias Fifka have been part of the board previously. Raphael Schäfer, a former Nuremberg goalkeeper, who lifted the DFB Cup as captain in 2007, makes his debut in the supervisory board. The composition of the supervisory board now stands at nine members, who have the authority to choose their own chairman.

Grethlein, despite the criticism and scrutiny from the fans, served as the chairman of 1. FC Nürnberg's Supervisory Board since 2014. However, the overwhelming support received by his competitors, including Schäfer, resulted in Grethlein's departure.
