Greta Thunberg's Days in Israel Come to an End: A Rough Sea Voyage and a Bumpy Exit

Greta Thunberg departs from Israel via air travel, following her yacht journey's conclusion.

Here's a glimpse: Greta Thunberg, the renowned climate activist, finds herself back in Sweden, having been booted out of Israel. Pictures of Thunberg aboard a plane, bound for the Land of the Midnight Sun, were released by the Israeli Foreign Ministry. Her journey includes a pitstop in France before touching down in her homeland.

Fun fact: It's not all smooth sailing for the other crew members of the intercepted Gaza solidarity ship. While Greta and a few others have signed the necessary exit forms, several others, including French EU parliamentarian Rima Hassan, are still holed up in a detention facility near Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv, refusing to sign their expulsion documents.

Wandering the Waves with a Purpose

Greta Thunberg embarked on a symbolic mission to challenge Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip by sea. However, her voyage was cut short when the Israeli military intercepted the ship, roughly 200 kilometers off the Gaza Strip's coast in international waters. After an overnight stay in the Israeli port city of Ashdod, Thunberg was sent packing.

Israel enforces a strict blockade of the Gaza Strip by sea, a measure that was initiated back in 2007 after the Islamic Hamas seized power. Egypt, bordering the coastal territory in the south, supports this blockade, with the stated purpose of preventing weapons supplies to Hamas.

A Stir in the Political Waters

The Interior Minister of Israel, Moshe Arbel, didn't mince words when he declared that the ship's crew, including Greta Thunberg, would not be permitted to set foot in Israel due to their provoking actions. Thunberg, however, reported a somewhat chaotic and uncertain detention experience but emphasized that the conditions on board the ship paled in comparison to the hardships faced by Palestinians in Gaza.

The Mission Unaccomplished, but the Fight Goes On

In a sign of solidarity, Greta Thunberg stated that the mission's primary objective was to draw attention to the ongoing blockade and provide aid to the beleaguered population of Gaza, who have been enduring over 20 months of conflict. Despite her forced departure, Thunberg and her fellow activists vowed to persist with their humanitarian endeavors and called for the release of all detainees.
