Gaza Conflict Update: Greta Thunberg Deported, Rima Hassan in Detention
Israel Bid Farewell to Greta Thunberg: Swedish Climate Activist Departs Following Anti-Peace Protest - Greta Thunberg Departs from Israel
In the recent Gaza conflict saga, Swedish activist Greta Thunberg has bid Israel adieu. The Israeli Foreign Ministry released images, confirming Thunberg's departure from the country. According to the ministry, she's now flying back to Sweden, making a brief stopover in France.
On the other hand, the detention drama continues for other activists aboard the intercepted Gaza solidarity ship. As per an Israeli media report by "ynet", eight activists, including French EU Parliament member Rima Hassan, have refused to sign the necessary exit papers.
Conversely, three activists have decided to cooperate and have signed the expulsion documents, preparing for their homebound journey. However, Hassan and the others remain detained in a facility near Tel Aviv unless they sign the exit forms or await a maximum detention period of 96 hours post-arrest.
The Israeli Interior Minister, Moshe Arbel, has barred these activists from stepping foot in Israel, asserting that the country's sovereignty should not be compromised by their "provocative actions."
Last Monday, the Israeli military seized the sailing ship "Madleen" en route to the Gaza Strip. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition alleges this occurred in international waters, around 200 kilometers from the Gaza coast. The ship's crew was subsequently captured by Israeli soldiers, who transported these unarmed activists against their will to Israel. The ship was towed to the Israeli port city of Ashdod by the Israeli military. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition claims that this Israeli action violated international law and constitutes an abduction.
Amnesty International expressed concern, stating the "violent interception" and blocking of the "Madleen" disregarded Israel's legal obligations towards the occupied Gaza Strip's civilian population. The crew consists of human rights defenders on a humanitarian mission. Amnesty International calls for their immediate and unconditional release.

Greta Thunberg
Deported to France, heading to Sweden
Thunberg, a key figure in the Gaza solidarity movement, was among the 12 activists on board the "Madleen" ship when it was taken by Israeli naval forces on June 9, 2025. Subsequently, she was detained. Her decision to sign the "illegal entry" acknowledgment document led to her immediate deportation from Israel. Thunberg was later spotted at Roissy-Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris[1][2].
Rima Hassan
Detained, awaiting legal proceedings
Like Thunberg, French MEP Rima Hassan was involved in the "Freedom Flotilla". Unlike Thunberg, Hassan refused to sign the "illegal entry" document. Consequently, she remains in Israeli custody, awaiting a hearing before an Israeli judge[2]. Her situation remains unresolved as of June 10, 2025[2].
Employment policy: Greta Thunberg, having been deported from Israel, is now returning to Sweden, having briefly stopped over in France.
Crime-and-justice, politics, general-news: French MEP Rima Hassan, part of the Freedom Flotilla, remains detained in Israel as she refuses to sign the necessary exit papers following her arrest.
