Sailing Mission Thunberg and Crew: Deported from Israel - Here's What Happens to Their Aid Goods
Greta Thunberg, accompanied by the "Madleen" group, departs from Israel - Greta Thunberg and her team depart from Israel
In a surprising turn of events, climate activist Greta Thunberg and her fellow sailors were recently expelled from Israel after their aid-laden vessel was intercepted by Israeli authorities, as per reports from stern. The group, initially aiming to bypass the Israeli sea blockade to deliver aid to the Gaza Strip, is currently making their way back to their respective homelands.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry announced via X online platform that the passengers of the "Madleen" (nicknamed the "Selfie-Yacht") are now in the custody of the Israeli authorities. It is speculated that they may depart from Tel Aviv airport as early as tonight. Those who refused to comply with the expulsion orders will be handed over to the jurisdiction of the courts.
Aid Goods for Gaza: Distribution Plan
The Israeli Foreign Ministry stated that the small quantity of aid goods on the yacht, excluding what was consumed by the team, will be safely transported to the Gaza Strip through legal aid channels. In a video clip published by the Ministry, the activists can be seen wearing orange life vests while on the boat, with their ultimate mission being to draw attention to the plight of the civilian population in Gaza, subjected to a prolonged blockade which breaches international law.
Originally set sail from Sicily over a week ago, the "Freedom Flotilla crew" aimed to circumvent the blockade and deliver aid to the Gaza Strip. Thunberg has repeatedly demonstrated her support for pro-Palestinian protests in the past. The Israeli military, however, took decisive action by boarding the ship in international waters and forcibly bringing the crew to Israel. This action has been referred to as kidnapping by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition.
The Gaza Strip Blockade: Past and Present
Since 2007, Israel has implemented a stringent blockade on the Gaza Strip, citing security concerns and weapons supplies to Hamas. This blockade severely restricts the movement of people and goods, violating international law. Egypt, neighbouring the Gaza Strip in the south, also officially supports the blockade, albeit to a lesser extent compared to Israel. The stated purpose is to prevent arms smuggling to Hamas; however, the captured vessel carried nothing but humanitarian aid supplies.
This military action, if found to violate the Geneva Conventions, could potentially be classified as a war crime. Regardless of ongoing conflicts, the international community continues to voice concerns about the blockade's impact on civilians and calls for measures to ensure adequate humanitarian assistance and alleviate undue suffering.
