Get ready to dive into the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia's democratic process on July 5th! The state government and the Legislative Powerhouse – the state parliament – are inviting you for an open day in Düsseldorf to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the state constitution. The theme, as in 2023, is "Hey, Democracy!".
Expect guided tours of select ministries and the state chancellery, where ministers will share insights into their daily work. Participate in various dialogue formats, ask questions, and join the conversation. Several exhibitions are also planned, and prior online registration is required for some of them. The state parliament, however, can be visited without prior reservation.
Participate in a "Ministerial Rally" and collect stamps from different stops. Gather at least three stamps, and you'll receive a small gift at the end.
"We show the workings of state politics behind the scenes, help make decisions visible, show the influential topics shaping our country, and provide a platform for open discussions," explained Minister President Hendrik Wüst (CDU). Deputy Minister President Mona Neubaur (Greens) added, "This open day offers a unique opportunity to make politics tangible and engage in lively dialogue, especially during times when the defense of democratic values is more crucial than ever."
Exploring the Rich History of the State Parliament
An exhibition titled "Jubilee. 75 Years of NRW Constitution" opened on June 3rd at the state parliament. The exhibition traces the history of the constitution's origins, adoption in 1950, and significant milestones that have influenced social developments in NRW.
All of this took place in Düsseldorf! North Rhine-Westphalia was formed in 1946 after World War II and the fall of the Nazi dictatorship by the British military government. The "Operation Marriage" was sealed in Düsseldorf on August 23, 1946, with Lippe joining in 1947. The NRW state constitution came into effect on July 11, 1950.
