Greens present draft program for upcoming state elections

The Green Party in Brandenburg is scheduled to unveil their first draft of the election program for the 2024 state elections this Sunday. Party members have been invited to propose amendments, modifications, or additions till the state party conference on January 20-21, 2024. Some of the preliminary points announced by the Greens include a legally binding climate protection law in Brandenburg, improved public transportation with an hourly service between 5 a.m. to 10 p.m, and weekly two-hour services, and a boost in the number of study places for teachers along with the establishment of a new teacher training center in Frankfurt (Oder).

Now, let's dive a little deeper into these proposals with some enlightening insights:

Climate Protection

The Greens aim to achieve climate neutrality in Brandenburg by 2045 as outlined in the Brandenburg Climate Plan. This ambitious plan involves the implementation of 103 measures aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and tackling climate change. The party also advocates for expanding renewable energy sources, aiming to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and achieve climate goals.

Public Transportation

In line with their environmental concerns, the Greens support the transition to zero-emission buses. This transition, including the use of battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell buses, is a move towards more sustainable urban transportation, significantly reducing carbon emissions. To encourage the adoption of these eco-friendly alternatives, the party proposes to replace traveling allowances with mobility allowances, which would be granted regardless of income to all employees.

Teacher Education

The Greens have identified the need to invest significantly in education, particularly in preschools and vocational schools. Furthermore, they advocate for higher education funding through the BAföG program to support students. Detailed plans regarding teacher training were not disclosed but their overall focus lies in enhancing education standards and qualifications of teachers to improve the overall quality of education in Brandenburg.

Besides these policy areas, the Greens also place a strong emphasis on social justice and equality. They advocate for progressive taxation, rent regulation, and higher minimum wages to support low and medium-income earners. Environmental policies, too, remain a key focus, as the party strives to mitigate climate change, reduce carbon emissions, and promote sustainability through environmentally-friendly practices.

Although the draft is yet to be finalized, these preliminary proposals exhibit the Greens' commitment to green politics, social liberalism, and pragmatic, moderate approaches to governance, consistent with their national and international policies.
