U.S. President Donald Trump, expressing interest in annexing Greenland, lacks the due consideration for the country's residents, asserted Greenland's prime minister on Monday, in a statement prior to the Danish territory's legislative elections.

US President Donald Trump doesn't seem to understand just how much Greenland deserves a bit of respect, according to the island's prime minister. This was stated during a radio interview on Monday, the day before Greenland's legislative elections.

"We deserve to be treated like human beings, and I'm not sure the American president has shown us that respect lately," Prime Minister Mute Egede said. He added that Trump's recent antics have made Greenlanders know to keep a safe distance from the United States.

Trump, in a post on his Truth Social network, promised to boost Greenland's prosperity if they agreed to become part of the US. He also insisted that the US would keep Greenland safe, similar to the role they've played since World War II.

This is not the first time Trump has made such comments. During a recent speech to the US Congress, he argued that the US needed Greenland for reasons of national and international security.

The timeline for Greenland's independence from Denmark has been a hot topic in Greenland's election campaign. In the past, Trump has intimated that he is willing to offer billions of dollars to make Greenland rich and invite them to join the United States. However, these statements have been met with derision from Republican members of Congress, which some Greenlanders perceived as belittling.

Egede commented that Trump's obsession with Greenland has made the islanders feel more insecure, not less. "With a president like Trump, who's known for being unpredictable, it's understandable that people feel uneasy," he said.

After Trump's speech to Congress, Egede wrote on Facebook that Greenlanders don't want to be Americans, or Danes either. In response to Trump's latest statements on Truth Social, a Greenland representative in the Danish parliament accused the president of election interference.

Greenland's Stance on Trump's Plans

Greenland's government, led by Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, has a unified stance against Trump's plans to acquire the island. Recent elections in Greenland led to a coalition government that emphasizes unity against any U.S. expansionary interests. This political alignment reflects Greenland's commitment to assert its independence and resist external pressures.

Greenland is cautiously considering the economic opportunities that could arise from increased American engagement, while maintaining its autonomy. The island is also concerned about potential threats to its strategic security, given its proximity to Russian and Chinese shipping routes.

International concerns have been raised by Trump's proposal, with NATO refusing to involve itself in facilitating U.S. acquisition of Greenland. This stance reflects the complex geopolitical dynamics surrounding the issue.
