Against the backdrop of US President Donald Trump's controversial takeover talks, Greenland's footballers are gunning for a spot in the North, Central America, and Caribbean football confederation (CONCACAF). National coach Morten Rutkjaer has confirmed their intent, voicing his support for Greenland's aspiration to join the footballing community.
"Trump's wanderlust doesn't pertain to my area of expertise," Rutkjaer shared in a candid chat with the Danish-German daily newspaper "Flensborg-Avis". He reiterated that while he stays mum about politics, he's more than keen on discussing football matters.
US-Greenland relations have been a hot topic, with Trump eyeing the resource-rich island and threatening a takeover in recent months. However, Rutkjaer is all about focusing on the beautiful game.
Greenland Football: CONCACAF Membership on the Horizon?
Greenland's association aims to secure a place among CONCACAF's 41 existing members. Rutkjaer has publicly endorsed Kalaallit Arsaattartut Kattuffiat (KAK), Greenland's football association that's spearheading the application process. Reports suggest that initial talks between representatives have been cancelled.
The World Cup Dream
A World Cup qualification bid is Rutkjaer's ultimate ambition for Greenland's footballers. He's currently overseeing a training camp in Denmark and is gearing up for a "national team" match against the Danish minority selection in Flensburg this Friday.
Greenland faces a hurdle in joining the European football association, UEFA, due to its non-recognition as an independent state by a majority of the United Nations. Yet, the barrier doesn't exist in the CONCACAF federation, offering a potential pathway for Greenland's football dreams.

- FIFA, UEFA & CONCACAF: Greenland is currently not a member of FIFA, CONCACAF, or UEFA. The Football Association of Greenland organizes domestic football competitions.
- Application Process: To join CONCACAF, Greenland would need to submit an application, addressing geographical eligibility, administrative requirements, and potential political and financial challenges.
The Commission, in light of Greenland's pursuit of CONCACAF membership, has been asked to consider submitting a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks arising from the use of the internet during their football training, considering the increased reliance on digital communication platforms like social media.
While the Greenland footballers continue their journey towards CONCACAF membership, their national coach, Morten Rutkjaer, expressed his enthusiasm for potential matchups against American football teams, broadening the horizons of Greenlandic football beyond the beautiful game.
