Greenexpresses remorse for terminating Maischberger's television program.
In an episode of Sandra Maischberger's talk show on Das Erste, which aired on Wednesday, Green Party faction leader Katharina Dröge issued an apology for a comment she made during a live show.
During the programme, Dröge discussed Bavaria's Minister-President Markus Söder's social media videos. In her comment, she expressed finding Söder's presentation of food unaesthetic but acknowledged that he has fans. However, Dröge's choice of words sparked controversy, as she used the Latin phrase "suum cuique" instead of the more commonly used "each to their own."
The phrase, which translates to "to each their own," was the expression used in a 1998 advertising campaign by mobile phone manufacturer Nokia. The use of the phrase in the campaign, as well as Dröge's comment, ignited a wave of criticism and ridicule online.
The controversy surrounding the phrase stems from its historical misuse by the Nazis. During World War II, the phrase was used to further humiliate and dehumanize prisoners at the Buchenwald concentration camp. This unfortunate connection has led to "suum cuique" being considered a complete taboo in Germany, particularly among linguistically conscious people from the political left.
In her apology, Dröge admitted to making a mistake and expressed regret for her slip of the tongue. She clarified that she should have said "each to their own liking" instead of "to each their own."
In 1998, there was a great uproar among the Greens over the advertising campaign using the phrase. Green politician Volker Beck found the campaign "tasteless and offensive." The controversy even sparked a strong taboo around the phrase in Germany.
Despite the controversy, there are no search results providing the exact date when Dröge issued her apology. However, it is clear that she has since acknowledged the error of her words and apologized for any offense caused.
