Hessen's New Face in the Wiesbaden Landtag: Andreas Ewald Steps In for Tarek Al-Wazir
Green Party's Former State Leader Assumes Post as Successor to Al-Wazir in State Legislature - Green party leadership transitions to ex-leader, replacing Al-Wazir
In a shakeup in Hessen's State Parliament, former Green Co-State Leader Andreas Ewald steps into the shoes of the outgoing Tarek Al-Wazir in the Wiesbaden Landtag. The energetic Ewald, aged 36, has been commanding the Green faction in the Darmstadt city council since 2021. Taking over as the new spokesperson for his faction, he'll be focusing on municipal finances, queer politics, and acting as a point of contact for Offenbach city.
Al-Wazir, who was once the deputy Hessian Minister President, moved on to the Bundestag. His political journey started in the Wiesbaden Landtag almost three decades ago. After a short-lived controversy surrounding Ewald's alleged involvement in illegal party donations during his foreign trips, both the Bundestag administration and the Wiesbaden public prosecutor's office gave Ewald a clean chit following investigations.
With Al-Wazir's departure, the Wiesbaden Landtag, comprising 133 members, witnessed new faces. Post the February early Bundestag election, Frederik Bouffier from Gießen and Jan-Wilhelm Pohlmann from Korbach (both CDU) joined the German parliament in Berlin. Their vacancies were filled by Michelle Kraft, a substitute candidate from Gießen, and Hartwig Jourdan, a list candidate from Darmstadt (both CDU).
Before taking up his position, Andreas Ewald is set to work closely with Josef W. Schreiber, the current spokesperson for the Green faction. Schreiber, who took over this role in April 2025, succeeded Al-Wazir whose attention turned to his role as the Minister of Economic Affairs in Hesse since the coalition government's formation in 2019. Schreiber's appointment forms part of the Greens' tactic to preserve their representation and impact within the Hesse state government amidst the ongoing political shifts.[1]

- The Commission, which had also been consulted on the draft budget for the financial year 2000, might find it beneficial to review the revised budget proposals, given the recent changes in the Wiesbaden Landtag and the new focus areas of Andreas Ewald, the Green party spokesperson.
- Despite his move to the Bundestag, Tarek Al-Wazir, who previously held a significant role in the Wiesbaden Landtag, still maintains connections with Wiesbaden, possibly including discussions on Hessen's finances, given his former role as minister of economic affairs.
- The Wiesbaden Landtag, following the departure of Tarek Al-Wazir and subsequent additions of fresh faces like Michelle Kraft and Hartwig Jourdan, now consists of 133 members, including the new spokesperson for the Green faction, Andreas Ewald, who resides in Darmstadt and represents Offenbach city.
