CDU's Lack of Focus on Economic Policy Criticized by Green Politician
A growing indifference towards economic policy within the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has been highlighted by Green politician Andreas Audretsch, who criticizes the potential appointment of Jens Spahn as the new Minister of Economics.
Audretsch sees the appointment of Spahn as a means to solve personnel problems rather than a commitment to economic policy. He believes that this move underscores a lack of interest in economic policy within the CDU, suggesting that strategic investments in future technologies, independence, and a targeted policy to help companies transition to a climate-neutral future are not priorities for the party.
Audretsch's criticism of the CDU's approach to economic policy remains consistent, as he previously expressed a perception of "programmatic emptiness" in their economic policy. He believes that the CDU's focus on military spending and fiscal conservatism over broader socioeconomic investments has led to a lack of interest in economic policy.
The discussion about Spahn's potential appointment is taking place after CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann stepped down from his position. Audretsch suggests that moving Spahn to the Ministry of Economics would further underscore this lack of interest in economic policy within the CDU.
The CDU and SPD coalition’s financial plans include a special infrastructure fund capped at 500 billion euros but explicitly exclude social programs like pensions, demonstrating a deliberate containment of economic policy scope in social areas. The strategy includes measures like cutting social programs, extending working hours, and lowering corporate taxes to boost competitiveness rather than investing broadly in social or economic modernization.
In contrast, Audretsch advocates for reforms that ensure secure pensions and social justice, opposing the CDU’s approach that risks increased old-age poverty and insufficient private retirement savings reforms. The Greens’ stance highlights the political divergence: CDU’s economic policies emphasize fiscal restraint and growth-oriented measures mainly through defense and market competitiveness, whereas Audretsch calls for more strategic investment in social welfare and intergenerational equity.
Audretsch also perceives Jens Spahn as a problem for Friedrich Merz due to his actions. He has sharply criticized the CDU for making the Ministry of Economics a "power political pawn."
