Green Party co-leader confesses to using an fossil fuel-based boiler rather than a renewable heat pump at her residence

In the run-up to the general election, the Green Party's co-leader, Carla Denyer, finds herself under scrutiny over her home heating system. Ms Denyer, the MP candidate for Bristol Central, has a gas boiler in her home, a fact that has sparked criticism from some quarters.

Despite this, Ms Denyer has announced plans to install an air source heat pump in her home after the election. This move aligns with the Green Party's manifesto, which pledges an investment of £9bn over the next five years for heating systems like heat pumps for homes and other buildings.

The Green Party has also stated they will campaign to change building regulations to require low carbon heating systems like heat pumps in all new homes. This proposed change, which would apply from an unspecified future date, is part of the party's broader emergency energy plan, which advocates for immediate action on renewables, insulation, energy saving measures, and higher benefits for those in fuel poverty.

The controversy surrounding Ms Denyer's home heating system started when it was revealed that she has a gas boiler. Some critics have claimed "hypocrisy" due to her calls for others to ditch their gas boilers. However, Ms Denyer has defended her decision, stating that she plans to install an air source heat pump after the election.

Notably, Matt Western, the Labour Candidate for Warwick & Leamington, has had an air source heat pump for 13 years, installed before he was in politics. He recently tweeted that he is greener than the Greens due to his long-standing use of an air source heat pump.

The issue has also caught the attention of GBNews Presenter Andrew Pierce, who claimed that Green Party leader Carla Denyer admitted having a gas fired boiler while telling others to ditch it. Similarly, @Artemisfornow posted on social media that the Green Party shows hypocrisy as their climate "emergency" activist Carla Denyer has a gas boiler despite subsidies available for installing an air source heat pump.

Ms Denyer, however, has maintained her commitment to renewable energy. Two years ago, she stated that renewable energy measures such as heat pumps are needed "Right now". The Green Party's push for climate action extends beyond individual homes, as they aim to make a broader impact on the national energy landscape.

Despite the controversy, Ms Denyer remains a prominent figure in the Green Party and a strong advocate for climate action. The installation of an air source heat pump in her home after the election will be closely watched as a testament to her commitment to the party's pro-heat pump policies.
