Joint Disaster Response Center in the Works for Greater Region

It's time for a collaborative hub in crisis management! Rhineland-Palatinate's Minister President, Malu Dreyer (SPD), recently suggested the necessity of a joint coordinating body for disaster and civil protection situations. This proposal was made during an interim summit for the Greater Region, held in Tawern (Trier-Saarburg district).

With a population of nearly twelve million, the Greater Region encompasses six diverse regions: Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Luxembourg, Lorraine (Grand Est), Wallonia, and the German-speaking community in Belgium. Taking the baton for two years, as of 2023, Rhineland-Palatinate is at the helm of this international gathering.

During the summit, the concept of a united "Civil Protection, Fire and Rescue Services" working group was established. The intention is to bolster cooperation, aiming for a fully operational, coordinating body by the end of 2024. This initiative sees itself focusing on cross-border disasters while also supporting neighboring regions during their crises.

Saarland's Minister President, Anke Rehlinger (SPD), underlined the importance of having established structures with clear contact points in such crisis situations. This would allow for swift and efficient information exchange, especially in the face of major events, including potentially devastating pandemics.

Cross-border police and customs collaboration have already seen a dedicated joint office in Luxembourg for the Greater Region for twenty years. The possibility of relocating the civil protection office to the same location is being considered but will require clarification with the incoming government.

The International Government has voiced its support for the creation of such a joint office, acknowledging its role in providing a unified response to cross-border crises and backing regional initiatives in disaster management.
