Great Women in Democratic Politics Gather at Georgetown Forum for Future Leaders
Georgetown University hosted a significant political forum on January 30, 2023, in collaboration with MSNBC. The event, co-hosted by the Institute of Politics and Public Service (GU Politics) at Georgetown, was the final officer candidate forum for the Democratic National Committee (DNC) ahead of their leadership vote on February 1.
The forum, held in Gaston Hall, saw candidates vying for key DNC positions, including chair, vice chair, and treasurer, present their cases and answer questions from Georgetown students. GU Politics Executive Director Mo Elleithee and MSNBC's Luke Russert moderated the day-long event, which also featured former GU Politics fellows and MSNBC anchors Jonathan Capehart, Jen Psaki, and Symone Sanders Townsend.
Elleithee expressed that the upcoming decade of politics and public service would be a focal point for GU Politics' programming as the institute commemorates its 10th anniversary in 2025. He emphasized that understanding the future direction of the Democratic Party is a pressing issue in politics today, and hosting this forum offered students a valuable opportunity to engage with potential DNC leaders.
In line with its tradition of inviting speakers from diverse political backgrounds, GU Politics has previously welcomed prominent figures such as former Vice President Mike Pence, former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and former U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley. In addition to hosting political forums, GU Politics has also been involved in events like the "Road to 2024" at both the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee and the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
Other partnerships have included a 2023 GOP presidential candidate series on national security and foreign policy in collaboration with the Associated Press, a 2019 Climate Forum in partnership with MSNBC, and a 2022 Washington DC Mayoral Debate. Content from the daylong DNC forum at Georgetown can be viewed online.
