Freiburg Secures Second Straight Bundesliga Win Against Struggling Bremen
SC Freiburg secured their second consecutive victory in the Bundesliga, defeating Werder Bremen 3-0 in a tough match at the Weser Stadium. The win was thanks to a penalty by Vincenzo Grifo (33.), a goal by Junior Adamu (54.), and an own goal by Karim Coulibaly (75.).
Before the match, Freiburg coach Julian Schuster highlighted the importance of their first win of the season. Despite a largely unremarkable first half where neither team replicated their form from their previous matches, Freiburg started the game compactly, not allowing Bremen to get into the game.
The second half saw a different story as Freiburg scored a counter-attack goal finished by Junior Adamu, putting them two up. Bremen, missing the speed and attacking prowess of Samuel Mbangula due to muscular problems, struggled to find their footing.
Marco Friedl's long-range shot was Bremen's only real threat in the first half, but the turning point came in the second half when Bremen's managing director Clemens Fritz stated that they needed more speed and more clarity in their actions at half-time. However, it was Freiburg's goalkeeper Noah Atubolu who stole the show, saving a penalty in the 59th minute, marking his fifth consecutive penalty save in the Bundesliga, a first in league history.
Atubolu's save proved to be a crucial moment as Bremen failed to score for the first time this season, with Coulibaly's own goal summing up Bremen's miserable afternoon. Freiburg's strong finish in their previous match against VfB Stuttgart was on display once again, securing a 3-1 win.
The victory boosted Freiburg's confidence ahead of their Europa League opener against FC Basel on Wednesday. On the other hand, Bremen face a tough trip to Bayern Munich next weekend, where another setback could be on the cards.
In the end, Freiburg's disciplined performance and Atubolu's heroics in goal were enough to secure the three points, moving them up the Bundesliga table.
