Cheese-Rolling Chronicles
Ty visited Cooper’s Hill in Gloucestershire last Monday, joining thousands of fans from around the world. The traditional event, dating back to 1826, sees participants aim to outrun an 8-pound wheel of Double Gloucester cheese sliding down a treacherous 180m slope at speeds up to 100km an hour.
The music student admitted he was inspired by a Netflix documentary of the perilous race years ago, thinking it looked like great fun.
On the day of the event, Ty donned a long black cape and pointy hat and lined up with competitors to enjoy the glorious day and friendly atmosphere, even though they had to wait an hour for the race to begin.
Ty didn’t have a strategy for the race, but his girlfriend Lola sewed a chinstrap on his hat to keep it in place, and she held onto his glasses to ensure they wouldn't shatter. Without a plan, he simply charged down the hill, thinking he would beat everyone in the race for the round cheese prize.
However, his footing gave way, leading to a precipitous drop, and Ty realized things were not going according to plan. Once down, he couldn’t recall much until he woke up in a compression suit three hours later.
Upon waking, he was subjected to a CAT scan and cognitive tests to ensure he had not suffered any brain trauma or broken bones, but the results were astonishing—Ty had miraculously survived relatively unscathed.
Ty recounted his experience, stating, "I’m incredibly grateful to still be here. I can laugh about the whole kerfuffle but it wasn't funny for my friends watching or my parents when they got the frightening phone call saying I was unconscious in the back of an ambulance. It’s my first near-death experience, and it doesn't feel real yet."
Unfortunately, the daring stunt won’t earn Ty a second chance at the wacky event, as he revealed he will not put himself or those who care about him at risk again.
