In the Residential Plutarco Elias Calles neighbourhood of Guadalajara, Jalisco, a 28-year-old woman was tragically murdered on July 13. The shooting was captured on video by a surveillance camera, showing a man approaching the victim's home, calling her out, and an altercation ensuing.

The attacker, who used an assault rifle, fired a shot as a warning before shooting the woman at close range, directly in the head. After the shooting, the woman instantly fell to the ground and lay unresponsive. The assailant then got into his car and fled the scene.

The Jalisco Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation into the killing, treating it as a femicide case. The authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and social media activity, and have summoned the victim's family and friends as witnesses. However, no publicly confirmed suspects have been identified as yet.

Ricardo Ruiz Velasco, a senior member of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), has been sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury and is being considered as a suspect in connection with the killing. The case has drawn attention due to the role of organized crime in femicide cases in the region.

This incident is part of the broader femicide and violence issues affecting women in Jalisco, where high rates of violence against women, including family and sexual violence and femicides, have been documented. Jalisco ranked among the top Mexican states for femicides in recent years, with a significant impact on adolescents and young women.

The occurrence of the crime during a public livestream has intensified the public and governmental response, highlighting ongoing challenges in addressing violence against women in Mexico. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities analysing video surveillance from the scene and surrounding areas, examining social media activity, and following leads connecting suspects to criminal cartels.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, Valeria Márquez, a woman in her mid-20s, was shot and killed live on TikTok inside her beauty salon in Zapopan, part of metropolitan Guadalajara, on May 13. The suspect, disguised as a delivery person, entered the salon, asked if she was Valeria, and then shot her in the chest and head during the livestream. Two men were seen outside the salon and fled the scene on a motorbike shortly after the shooting.

The case has drawn significant attention due to its public nature, and the authorities are actively investigating, reviewing surveillance footage, and social media for clues. However, no publicly confirmed suspects have been identified as yet. The investigation is ongoing, and the authorities are working diligently to bring those responsible to justice.

These tragic incidents underscore the urgent need for action to address the ongoing issue of violence against women in Mexico.
