Lighting Up Peace: 10-Year-Old Churchill's Great-Grandson Honors WWII

The UK observed the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in a solemn manner. King Charles III and Prince William led the ceremonies, with a special appearance by a young, influential family member.

King Charles, 76, and Prince William, 42, paid their respects at Westminster Abbey, laying wreaths at the tomb of the unknown soldier. A handwritten message from the King read, "We will never forget." Queen Camilla and Princess Kate were also in attendance, as were other royals, Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and veterans.

A significant moment came when a 10-year-old great-great-grandson of Sir Winston Churchill joined the proceedings. This young lad, whose name is Alexander Churchill, lit a peace candle - a symbol of the legacy Winston Churchill left in the war and his pursuit of peace.

Churchill had announced the surrender of Nazi Germany on the radio on May 8, 1945, marking the end of World War II in Europe. For the evening, a concert was planned on a parade ground in London, and pubs were allowed to stay open for two extra hours on this day of remembrance.

"Never Again" More Than a Slogan

In Austria, a commemorative event was held to mark the end of World War II in Europe. Chancellor Christian Stocker reiterated the country's historical responsibility, emphasizing that the commitment to "Never Again" must go beyond just a phrase due to the surge in anti-Semitism.

In Paris, President Emmanuel Macron planned a ceremony at the tomb of the unknown soldier under the Arc de Triomphe in the evening. A military orchestra, consisting of musicians from various countries, including Germany, was also scheduled to perform.

In Western Europe, May 8 is the primary day of remembrance, marking the unconditional surrender of the Wehrmacht in World War II to the Allied forces. The corresponding document was signed on May 7, 1945, in Reims, and the surrender took effect at 23:01 on May 8, 1945, making it the day of the end of the war in Europe in the West.

Russia, on the other hand, celebrates the anniversary of the end of the war on May 9, known as Victory Day over Nazi Germany. This year's celebrations were overshadowed by Russia's war against Ukraine, with more than 20 foreign heads of state and government, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, expected as guests. The only representative of an EU country attending the celebrations in Moscow is the Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico, disregarding warnings from Brussels.
