It's been over a freakin' decade since GTA 5 dropped, but what's cooking with its successor?

What's GTA 6?GTA VI (GTA 6 for the basic folks) is the sixth main installment of the Grand Theft Auto video game series.
Rockstar Games co-founder Sam Houser, in a statement released December 4, 2023 alongside the game's first official trailer, said, "Grand Theft Auto VI continues our efforts to push the boundaries of what's possible in immersive, narrative-driven open-world experiences. We're stoked to be able to share this new vision with players everywhere."
GTA 5 offered single-player and multiplayer modes, where players could engage in cooperative heist missions, whack individuals, invest in a synthetic stock market, buy businesses, rob innocents, ride rides, and more.
GTA 6 Release DateRockstar Games announced GTA 6's development back in February 2022, but they ain't gonna let us play it until 2025. But then, in May 2025, they pushed that date to 2026, with a firm drop date of May 26, 2026.
"We're truly sorry this is later than you anticipated," their statement read. "The anticipation and excitement surrounding a new GTA has been downright humbling for our entire team. We wish to express our heartfelt gratitude for your support and patience as we hammer away at this masterpiece."
To soften the bitter pill of the postponement, Rockstar dropped a second official trailer a few days later.
GTA 6 PlatformsIt's launching on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, but no PC version's been confirmed as of yet.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick hinted in February 2025 that a PC version is on the cards, since Rockstar's usually waited to hit PC after consoles. However, he didn't make any specific game announcements.
GTA 6 LeaksIn September 2022, a GTAForums user, "teapottuberhacker," shared roughly 90 pieces of leaked content from GTA 6 on the forum. Although the content has since been taken down due to a copyright infringement claim, it contained numerous leaks for the impending game. These were probably swiped from bug reports from QA testers, according to PC Gamer.
A British teen, 18-year-old Arion Kurtaj of the cybercriminal group Lasus$, hacked into Rockstar Games and leaked sensitive information in 2022. He was convicted in the UK in August 2023.
One of the leaked videos featured a playable Latina character named Lucia, as well as a white male character named Jason. And guess what? The leaked character names line up with the Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval characters in the game's official trailers!
GTA 6 StoryWe can expect the game to follow two protagonists: the female playable character of Lucia Caminos and her male partner Jason Duval, who seems like he'll also be playable. The tale appears to have some Bonnie and Clyde vibes, 'cause it's focused on a couple of American outlaws.
The second official trailer opens with Duval going about his daily life, getting swooned over by babes, working out, and robbing a convenience store, before meeting Lucia as she's sprung from prison. The two then embark on a crime spree marked by robberies and pursued by the police.
The exact nuances of the story are still under wraps, but from the trailer, we see the broad spectrum of the Leonida region. Lucia and Jason are shown on a fancy yacht, fighting it out at a rundown motel, getting jiggy with it at a club in Vice City, and nearly plummeting from a plane.
GTA 6 New FeaturesIt's rumored that a variety of new locations within Leonida have been exposed via the second trailer and released still images. These hangouts include Port Gellhorn, filled with rednecks and bikers; the swanky party region of Leonida Keys; the crocodile-inhabited Grassrivers—not to mention Ambrosia, an industrial town, and Mount Kalaga, a national park. Speculation swirls that GTA 6 might have the largest map of the entire franchise.
GTA 6 Evolving WorldThere's buzz that the game's world may evolve, with Rockstar possibly planning to release seasonal changes or updates to transform the game's maps.
GTA 6 In-game Character TransformationsSome believe that characters might become more or less muscular based on how much they work out in-game, a nod to GTA: San Andreas. Equally, detractors think the character's hair will grow naturally like in Red Dead Redemption 2, with Duval's hair changing dramatically throughout the trailers and provided screenshots.

GTA 6 CryptoRumors have circulated for years that GTA 6 might shower players with in-game crypto rewards or otherwise incorporate cryptocurrency. However, these rumors remain unsubstantiated.
In May 2023, Game Rant speculated that a fake crypto might not actually be implemented in GTA 6 but that it may simply serve as a punchline. Bloomberg views GTA 5 as a "satirical portrayal of America" that offers "an absurdist parody that throws insults at everything."
