Grand Performance by Otyrar Sazy Orchestra Celebrating Nurgisa Tlendiyev's Centennial Anniversary
Let's dive into the captivating world of Kazakh music, celebrating the centennial of the maestro, Nurgisa Tlendiyev! On April 1, the Qazaq Concert in Astana honored Tlendiyev's remarkable legacy with Otyrar Sazy folklore-ethnographic orchestra leading the charge.
Opening the anniversary Alkissa-Nurgisa concert, the spotlight was on Tlendiyev's mesmerizing masterpieces. Known for his extraordinary talent, Tlendiyev crafted timeless melodies that resonate deeply with every Kazakh. Through Otyrar Sazy, he breathed an exceptional variety of Kazakh instrumental beauty into the classical orchestra.
The concert program showcased beloved classics such as "Karlygash" (Swallow Birds), "Ata Tolgau" (Father's Song), and "Oz Elim" (My Homeland), as well as kuis (a traditional musical composition). The event was made even more special as Tlendiyev's daughter, Dinzukhra Tlendiyeva, served as the artistic director and principal conductor, carrying on her father's impressive legacy.
Dinzukhra shared her memories of her father's extraordinary talent and challenging work ethic. Remembering a long-ago concert, she said, "The people almost broke the doors of the opera theater. Since then, this 100th anniversary is to be another important celebration."
Her father, a skillful man, formed lasting relationships with poets, musicians, and writers. However, Tlendiyeva recollected her father's high standards for musicians, saying he had "a strict work ethic," firing and re-hiring musicians swiftly. At home, Tlendiyeva remembered him as a "good father and a good husband."
Tlendiyev's distinct compositional style is one of Dinzukhra's fondest memories. She explained that her father would write music like a letter, starting with a pen and often finishing late at night. Whenever she asked her mother about it, her mother recalled Tlendiyev saying, "Get up, Dakha - 'Alqissa (a renowned kui) is coming out."
Kazakh singer Zhubanysh Zheksenuly brilliantly performed Tlendiyev's poignant "Azheme" (To My Grandmother) song. Reflecting on Tlendiyev's impact, Zheksenuly expressed confidence in the lasting power of his compositions, remarking, "The songs of our Nurgisa ata are in our hearts, the hearts of our parents, our grandparents. That is why these songs will last as long as the Kazakh people live."
The Astana Times had the opportunity to speak with Zheksenuly, who shared memories of Tlendiyev visiting his native village and performing concerts. This concert was just the beginning of a series of events celebrating Tlendiyev's centennial, with international recognition under UNESCO and the International Organization of Turkic Culture (TÜRKSOY) to follow.
