Grabbin' Grammozis Glee: FCK's Fresh Start in the Palatinate
New FCK manager Dimitrios Grammozis was all smiles following the team's DFB Cup victory over 1. FC Nürnberg. In front of a nationwide audience, Kaiserslautern's managing director Thomas Hengen showered his boss with praise, dubbing the performance as a "colossal fight," a "collective super show."
The hire of Grammozis as Dirk Schuster's successor paid off almost immediately in the first game. Ragnar Ache, who scored the game-winning goal, said, "Today, we truly exhibited what FCK is all about." After a dismal November, during which they didn't snag a single win and suffered a 4-1 defeat to Magdeburg, FCK's 2-0 win against Nürnberg brought in some extra cash and a boost in morale.
"A big round of applause for the players! The last few weeks haven't been a walk in the park, but these guys played a fantastic game," Grammozis noted, still grinning from ear to ear. Introduced as the new coach less than 48 hours before the quarter-final match, Grammozis had his work cut out for him in the days leading up to the game. "It was a rollercoaster of a few days for me," Grammozis admitted, "We had to iron out a lot of fine details, creating a structure, and planning how best to utilize that brief window of time."
Now, with the Hertha BSC game on the horizon, scheduled for Saturday (13:00), Grammozis can take a breather.
